E-learning Standards Body Says Sumtotal Officially Certifies Against New Guidelines

According to the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative, SumTotal® Systems’ newly released learning management system – TotalLMS™ 7.5 – conforms to the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM®) Version 2004 3rd Edition, an e-learning standards initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. SumTotal (NASDAQ: SUMT) makes software that not only delivers and manages training over the Internet but also automates employee performance appraisals. According to the ADL Initiative, SCORM is a set of specifications that enable interoperability of Web-based learning content.

“Simply put, customers want the online courses that they buy or build to run as expected on a learning management platform,” said Jon Ciampi, SumTotal’s vice president of marketing. “We believe embracing the SCORM 2004 standard and receiving ADL’s certification is a critical step in meeting the marketplace’s expectations.”

The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense established the ADL as a forum for cooperative research and development of new learning technology prototypes, guidelines and specifications. The ADL Initiative released its 3rd edition of SCORM Version 2004 on October 20, 2006.

This fall, SumTotal completed a series of self-tests against the 3rd edition of SCORM 2004. SumTotal submitted the results to the ADL, which independently validated TotalLMS 7.5 against a conformance test suite and subsequently filed the test results on the ADL’s Web site at www.adlnet.org. The ADL now recognizes TotalLMS 7.5 as a certified product under the SCORM 2004 3rd Edition.

“We applaud SumTotal’s commitment to conforming to the ADL Initiative’s elearning standards,” said Paul Jesukiewicz, deputy director of the ADL Initiative. “We’re pleased to see SumTotal, which was one of the early adopters among many providers of learning management systems, to officially certify with our 3rd edition of SCORM Version 2004.

“SumTotal’s actions not only advance the cause of implementing standards across the elearning industry,” added Jesukiewicz, “but also give public- and private-sector customers a way to validate vendors’ claims of interoperability between elearning content and learning management systems.”

Will You Succeed as a Stock Broker?

Description:

Some people have to make a career change for factors beyond their control and sometimes because their company is downsizing. Others do it because they lose interest in their old job, or because they find something more rewarding to do.

Content:

Many people, who are already employed in different professions, dream of taking up a career in stock broking. A midlife career change is an important decision that will affect your future and that of your family. The pros and cons need to be weighed and discussed with your family and friends, so that you will get their valuable advice and have their support.

The most important consideration is the reason why you want to become a stock broker. Being interested in making lots of money is not a good enough reason to make such an important change in your life. Are you genuinely interested in the stock markets? If you can honestly say that you find everything about the stock markets exciting, then you can consider making the switch.

Look for stock broker career information and seek career counseling before you finally decide to make a career change. Career aptitude testing will help you to decide if you have it in you to become a successful stock broker.

Some people prefer to go into property management, which involves maximizing the net revenues from property. In this field, there is a need for self-motivated people with problem solving skills, who can handle criticism.

The essential attitude, knowledge and skills.

Stock brokers need to be ambitious, have strong selling skills and be able to handle frequent rejections. New stock brokers have to be ready to work for long hours to find customers and to establish themselves.

Stock brokers need to have excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to communicate with confidence. Employers look for mature, self-motivated people, who have been successful in their careers and are capable of working independently.

Stock brokers should be good negotiators and be comfortable dealing with different types of people. They must be well organized and be able to handle a variety of tasks, while under pressure.

Qualifications in finance, economics or business can be an asset, though they are not essential. Most stock brokers are graduates and the larger companies insist on this, though graduation is not an essential requirement for becoming a stock broker.

You will need to get career training to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to function effectively as a stock broker. In the United States, you have to get a license by passing the General Securities Registered Representative Examination and may also be required to post a bond.

You have to work with a brokerage firm for at least four months, to be eligible to take the examination. In many states, people are also required to take the Uniform Securities Agents State Law Examination.

A career change is an important decision and you need to take your time to weigh the positive and negative aspects, before you take the plunge. Making sure that careful considerations are given now to build your future will make your journey to become a stock broker fun and smooth.

Are Exchange Programs Useful?

Description:

After World Wars exchange programs appeared. There were a lot of doubts and contradictory opinions about them expressed on various congresses and seminars, but the truth is, they are useful and should exist till the present and in the future.

Content:

The two World Wars left the world lying in ruins. Right after the consensus was reached, the parties started to seek for ways to restore cooperation and good relations. The first step was the creation of international organizations like UNO, EU, NATO and so on. These organizations were created in order to develop a common system of international laws, partnership, economical grounds and other conveniences countries can provide each other with. Another step was made in the field of education and labor. Such countries as Japan, the US, the UK and other post-industrial participants of war started hosting representatives from the countries of the third world. At first these were workers and professionals that shared ideas, skills, experience and strategies. But then students of schools, colleges and universities flooded major cities and this process continues until today. People form other countries travel to learn something about the lifestyle, the folkways of the country they visit. Some of the programs still exist but the majority of the project the US has established were closed or stopped due to the shortening of the budget. Did it happen because the US increased the budget for the military affairs or the programs were proclaimed to be useless? Let us try to find the answer.

International exchange programs make their beginning since the middle of the nineteenth century. The aim was to restore peace and understanding between the people of former countries-rivals. American students were lucky enough to witness the historical event, the fall of the Great Wall in Berlin and spread the spirit of freedom and independence between the people of Germany and other European countries. The key stone is hidden in the fact that young generation is the future of the country and if young men and women establish strong bonds and connections due to exchange programs, partnership will be granted in the future. It took and still takes a lot of effort to get the scholarship to study abroad so you can make a conclusion that these students were the best of the best. Hosting students from different parts of the world Americans have an opportunity to experience the mystery and uniqueness of each culture. Students coming to study were wise enough to treat people that gave shelter with respect and gratitude and hosts were kind enough to give shelter and be hospitable and understanding. This exchange gets us closer to the answer on some of the questions we tended to think about as posers.

Bright future awaits a student that studied in a good school abroad. Not only is he/she a carrier of a perfect knowledge of the language, but also a mature person. Exchange students pass a good school of life being young and alone in a foreign country. This is where they get independence, wisdom, respectability and experience. Any organization viewing a resume of an exchange student will highly encourage his/her employment. Some cosmopolites dream about the universal culture that will unite peoples around the globe. But there is one "but": the uniqueness of millions of cultures and traditions and therefore the history will be lost. It is great to know may languages and cultures, but none of them may appear better than the one your ancestors created for you to develop it further. Respect and deep abiding love for your own culture is what matters.

Retirees Returning to Work

More than one-third of retirees are planning to return to the workforce to gain the "personal satisfaction" of working, while nearly 29 percent are being driven by financial worries. The findings are contained in a study by global human resource consultancy DMB, which surveyed nearly 140 people at the AARP conference in September. Although 54 percent dismiss the specter of age bias, many participants acknowledge that it can be difficult to win the respect of younger bosses. (Shared by Nancy Branton)

Workaholics Anonymous
More and more Americans are working more and more hours. Some believe they must put in the extra time in order to hang onto their jobs, while others think that spending lots of time in the office or on the road is the key to career success.
According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average workweek in the U.S. now drags on for 49 hours, which means Americans are working 350 more hours per year than their counterparts around the world. Worse, recent surveys indicate that American workers are also cutting back on or even eliminating their vacations in order to meet their employers' demands.
Spherion conducted a survey several years ago that explored where people are spending their time. It polled 600 people and found that a staggering 51% spent 7 or more hours of personal time each week thinking about work. When asked what part of their lives this behavior most adversely affected:
* 32% said family and relationships
* 27% said health and fitness
* 20% said their personal lives and hobbies
Bottom line: over-doing work is a harmful addiction. There is a Web site that provides support for those who are afflicted. Read the complete article for tips on overcoming workaholism (see link below).

The Zero Tolerance Debate: The Harvard Business Review magazine (November 2006 issue), has published an extensive article entitled "The Reign of Zero Tolerance," about the pros, cons, and best practices around the practice of "zero tolerance" in companies. See pages 39-52.

Newspaper Ads Still Important to Job Seekers: While many employers have migrated from traditional newspaper ads to online advertising to meet recruitment objectives, they may want to reconsider their strategy. Close to two-thirds of job seekers use both online and newspaper ads to seek work, according to a survey by the Conference Board.
Statistically, more than 71 percent of survey participants say they use online ads, while 70.6 percent reported using newspaper ads. The Conference Board polled a nationally representative sample of 5,000 household for the study, released in early November 2006.
Newspaper ads work well for employers and job seekers in rural areas where there tends to be less access to Internet connectivity. In more metropolitan areas like San Francisco or Seattle, online ads could be more effective.
Geography is not the only factor. Certain pockets of the population have more Internet access, like office professionals.
The bottom line for a company is knowing who they are targeting when looking to fill job openings, as it will influence where to advertise.

Time Management Training: Do you Know How You're Spending your Time Now?

Description:

Time management training helps you to see how you use your time now. If you’re like most people you really don’t know how you are spending your time now.

Content:

Time management training helps you to see how you use your time now. If you’re like most people you really don’t know how you are spending your time now. You let time slip away and at the end of the day you just don’t know where it went.

Taking one week and tracking how you really spend your time is an eye opening time management training technique. Most people find it very hard to do this, but they also find great value in the exercise. Track your time each day in 30 minute increments just noting how you are spending your time each interval. You have to do this as you go. Trying to write down how you spent each interval at the end of the day just won’t work. It doesn’t even work waiting a few hours. You simply won’t be able to recall how you really spent that time.

The value of this time management training technique comes from the big picture. At the end of the week group your activities into big categories like: phone calls, appointments, projects, etc. Then total up how much time was spent in each category. Most people are shocked to learn how much of their time is literally wasted on unimportant things.

The power of this time management training technique comes for taking what you know to create what you want. Now that you know how you are spending your time currently you can change your future by planning how you will use your time. Currently you plan your time for how things are and as long as you continue to do that things will remain unchanged for you. If you want to use your time differently you have to start by planning how you want to use your time actually making appointments or blocking out time in your calendar and then stick as closely to your plan as possible.

You can’t ever change the unexpected, but you can change how you respond to the unexpected. With your newly laid plans for how you will spend your time you are prepared to deal with the unexpected. When the unexpected happens, and it will, you can look at your calendar evaluate the importance of the unexpected and determine either when you will schedule it in or if it truly has to be dealt with now how you will rearrange your calendar to compensate.

Get Rich Quick Scams Revealed
Read this article before you consider paying for a "get rich quick" program.
From: http://www.dollarsearning.com
Everybody would love to make lots of money quickly, working from home, and only doing a few hours of work per week. I've spent the past two years trying to find a great way of doing this. Only over the course of the past few months have I found any "get rich quick" programs worth buying. I've been trying to make money online for a long time. I had a few small websites, but they never made much more than a few hundred per month. It was easy money and didn't require much work on my part, but I knew there were people out there doing better than I was and I knew I could do as well as them.
Now, I've seen a lot of "get rich quick" programs. Most of these people make claims about earning $2000/day with Google or something similarly insane. Almost all of these people are complete liars. Even if they were making $2000/day with Google AdSense, it'd be because they had high- traffic websites with a lot of quality content. I'd know, because in one whole month, I never even made half of what they promised I'd make daily with their programs. Maybe you've already been scammed by one of these fraudsters. Anyway, I finally got sick of what was being offered.
I decided I'd look through the all of the "get rich quick" programs I could find and see if there were any that were actually legitimate. I found that there were owners selling their programs for well over $100, but the information in them could be found almost anywhere online for free. Additionally, they all contained out-of-date information, had no e-mail support, no money back guarantees, and broken links in the downloads section.
In conclusion, almost all of the programs I found were completely useless. The owners knew it, but they couldn't care less about their customers since they didn't offer refund policies! Amazingly, while looking through all of the programs, I actually did find a few legitimate programs. They were run by ordinary people like you and me, and they had found some great methods of making money from their home by doing very little work.
I spent some time working with those programs, and my income is now ten times what it used to be. These programs provided a large amount of great information on how to make extra money on your computer doing very little work. Numerous customers had provided great feedback and reviews for their products. Many of them have started to make money just days after buying!
Our programs have excellent prices, and the authors have a group of paid staff who are dedicating to helping you or providing assistance if you need any. I must say I was amazed! If you do decide to purchase any of the programs listed below, I recommend you join quickly. Most of the owners tell me they are getting an overwhelming number of sales and plan on raising prices in the near future, so order while prices are still low!

Don’t Let your Hot Leads Cool Off

Description:

Every day in sales and business is critical. That lead you receive today, could very well be in the hands of your competition tomorrow.

Content:

Every day in sales and business is critical. That lead you receive today, could very well be in the hands of your competition tomorrow.

That is why I can’t stress enough the importance of taking full advantage of your leads once you receive them.

Leads are not meant to sit around pinned onto bulletin boards, or placed in a tickler file. They are meant to be acted on.

The thought process of the customer is to shop around for a product or service, so they have put the word on the street that they are on the market for a particular product.

If someone within your professional circle gives you a qualified lead, it is highly reasonable that the customer on this lead has made several people aware of their interests in a product or service. Which would mean that their name and phone number is being passed around in more than one professional circle.

The timing on a lead is so important, the moment you receive the lead, pick up the phone and make contact with that person.

By not acting on a lead, you have two things working against you. One, you are allowing for your competition to get the jump on you. And two, you are giving your potential customer an opportunity to seek out somebody else to provide them with the product or service they are looking for.

I once worked with a guy when I was in the banking industry. He belonged to a few networking groups, and when he received a lead at one of his weekly meetings, he would come back to the office, pin the lead onto his calendar and let it sit there for three to five days.

When he finally got around to calling the name on the lead, he always received the same response. The customers would inform him that they were no longer interested, because they were working with someone else.

He would than hang up the phone and complain that he had the worst luck when it came to leads.

I think the message here is clear. This is an example of what not to do with your leads.

By letting a hot lead sit around and cool off, you are guaranteed to lose that customer.

Keep in mind, when someone gives you a lead, that someone is most likely giving your potential customer feed back. So that potential customer will have your name, and know when the lead was given to you.

I don’t think your customer would appreciate a phone call three to five days after you have received their information. Even if they are still on the market for your product, you will not be off to a good start.

Leads were meant to be acted on. So the next time you receive one, don’t hesitate, stop what you are doing, and contact that person. Good luck.

A common theme floats through the bleachers of any youth sports event. This theme embodies the essential elements of teamwork that are crucial to every business in America. Every manager has the task of assembling teams of people and leading them in a successful direction. Obviously, this sounds much easier than it is, but why?

Ask the parents of young athletes what they think of the coaching and leadership of their sons or daughters team. Most will offer a positive remark about the team and the coach. The unspoken is often at the heart of the matter and deals with the only participant they truly care about; their child. Parents reserve the right to hold lofty opinions of their offspring’s athletic prowess and ability to impact the team. They sense that coaches try hard, but rarely see the true athletic genius of their child. Those of you who’ve spent countless hours on cold, aluminum bleachers can relate to this message.

The problem lies mostly in the message that kids receive at home. They listen and give their team and coach their best effort in practice only to hear a parent tell them how underappreciated and misused they really are on the field of play. Many of these athletes then return to practice wondering themselves why they are not the center of attention or the leading scorer. The results can be devastating for the young person. Unsure of their real value and role on the team they can lose interest, pull others down, or quit. Because the window of athletic participation is short lived for all kids, we often miss the mark as parents and coaches. Youth coaches have a unique opportunity to develop not only the team but each young person's life. The beauty of sports in our world today is that the playing field can be a powerful teacher of life's lessons to come.

In business, just as in youth sports, the football model holds true. Imagine yourself as a football coach for a second. The goal is to establish a vision, set goals, provide roles for participants, and design a path to success. Not until you get each of the players to buy into the game plan will you move ahead in the right direction. So where does the football analogy come in?

As the coach you must decide who will fill all of the positions on the field. Much like fielding a business team or office staff, the head coach must find and develop the best center, quarterback, receiver, and place kicker. What qualifications are needed in each position? How do you entice players to accept less glamorous roles on the team? Do you have quality people in your organization that can properly fill and execute these positions or do you need to recruit them? What strategy do you use when a player will not accept the role you present? Would you know how to put the best possible team on the field if you were the coach? The role of a business leader is much the same.

To crystallize this process, a great coach or leader will instill the value and greatness of each person on the team within their specific role. Truthfully, almost every kid grows up wanting to be the quarterback or receiver. What would a team look like with 11 quarterbacks and no one to snap the ball or block for them? As players fit and fill roles on the team they buy into the importance of what each bring to the table. They gain strength and confidence by doing their job well. Without their role being filled in an important way, the team does not execute to its capabilities. When more than one player fails to accept or execute their role, the team begins to deteriorate from the inside. On the outside, losses fill the schedule instead of wins. My advice for every business leader is to take a look into the genius of the great coaches in sports. You can find them at the elementary, high school, college, and pro levels. How and why do they make these tough personnel decisions on a daily basis, year after year. You’ll find that each are masters at defining roles and establishing the importance of each role. As each part of the team is assembled and developed through practice and hard work, the inner workings of a successful team are in place. Take a page from the football playbook and create your own winning team.

Three Steps to your Career Plan

Description:

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” This saying is especially true when it comes to career and professional development.

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”

You have heard this before.

This saying is especially true when it comes to career and professional development.

Unfortunately most people just “go with the flow” with their jobs. They don’t have goals, purpose and direction.
One day they find them selves trapped in an emotionally draining and unsatisfying job. This is the harsh reality for many professionals.

The good news is that “you can control your career path.”
With the advancements in the information age, globalization, and the current economic development there are more opportunities than ever to get the career you are passionate about.

Think of career planning as you would if you are planning a trip.

First you would decide where you want to take off from, where you want to land at. Then you would work out the schedule, the timing and the intermediate stops.

If you don’t like planning trips, "relax" you can hire a travel agent. If you don’t like planning your career you can hire a career coach to guide you through it (I recommend trying on your own first, because it makes your career coaching session much more efficient and beneficial).

You can draft your Career Plan in three easy steps; I use the acronym K.D.OTm (pronounced like kido) to remember it
Step -1- (K) Know where you are now.
Step -2- (D) Decide where you want to go.
Step -3- (O) Organize a plan to get you there

K - Know where you are now.
The ancients knew it best when they said “know they self.” You can know yourself by looking at your surrounding and knowing where you are now. Take a real look at your career now; what do you like about it? What don’t you like?
Make sure you take what you like now with you when you go to where you want to go!

D – Decide where you want to go.
Based on the information you gathered from where you are, Decide your destination now. Write it down and get excited about the possibility (everything is possible).

O – Organize a plan to get you there.
Winners have plans. Planning happens by back-tracking from your desired destination all the way back to your current place and position. Step-by-step work your way backward till you have a completer path.

If you are visual person chart it out, if you are logical outline it, and if you are creative mind-map it. And if you are like me you would do it in all the previous forms discovering different insights with every way.

The important thing to learn is this: to get ahead with your job and get far more satisfaction with your career you need to create a career plan that will get you smoothly from where you are to where you want to be.

Jot down the KEDO steps and start your career plan ‘today’, it is easy and straight forward, and notice how excited you are when have that plan in your hand.

Guaranteed Government Grants

Description:

Everyday I speak with at least one person who claims to have found a website with a guarantee for a free government grant. What they want me to tell them is that it is true.

Everyday I speak with at least one person who claims to have found a website with a guarantee for a free government grant. What they want me to tell them is that it is true. The truth is there are no guarantees anyone can make or keep about who gets a grant, whether it is from a private institution or the federal government.

The guarantee that anyone can get a grant for any reason is completely untrue. What determines whether you receive a grant or not, is in how you approach and complete the granting process. Requesting funding for you to take a vacation or buy yourself a new luxury sports car is waste of your valuable time and clutters the granting committees’ evaluation process with frivolous grant requests.

Most of what you see and read on the TV and the internet are true. There are thousands of grants available for just about any worthy project. You do not need to be a minority or non-profit, but many of the grants are designed to benefit that segment of society. Grants are not designed to benefit just the individual, but rather the community as a whole.

Many businesses, new and established, have received grant funding if they are providing a service to the community that is needed, promoting economic growth, or providing jobs that do not already exist. A well thought out business strategy is the first step to developing a plan to request grant funding.

Among other claims made are that you will receive a grant in a determined amount of time. Grants are awarded through out the year by many different organizations and the government. The closing dates for grants are always posted and very few are awarded on a case by case basis. Sometimes the wait can last up to a year to know if you will receive funding.

I always encourage all my clients to work on their grant proposal continually so they will be prepared when they find an appropriate funding source. The only guarantee I can make to my clients is that if they do not seek grant funding in a professional and timely manner, they will never receive a grant.

Another misconception is that you can pay to get a grant. Once again, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is not. Anyone who advertises that for hundreds of dollars they will get you a grant is probably just a scam. There many good programs out there that will help you learn the process for under $50.For a list of grant programs that I have personally researched that will assist you in achieving your goal, please visit Grants for Money
