This is just the beginning of the anxiety and tension that one feels as they step into the sometimes, deep and almost always unknown waters, of home business

When a person starts a home business it sets off a chain of events that can be both devastating and rewarding at the same time.

The expectations are always high and the realization that a home business, especially in the beginning, will take some serious work is a real blow for those that are not serious about such an undertaking.

Many people that I have spent time with discussing starting a business from their home truly had a real desire to have a business of their own because of the wonderful dreams they had in their head of fancy cars, big houses, and a lot of zeros in the numbers in their bank accounts, but realized after our discussion that those things are the end result of long hours and hard decisions. The majority of them changed their minds when they realize that being the operations officer of a home business operation is not a little walk in the park.

The business decisions that one has to make in the beginning when operating a business from home is a lonely and scary time because in a lot of cases the success or failure of that business rides on that decision and there is no other financial backing and no other board members working to help the business survive.

But, knowing all of this you take the plunge and sign -up with a couple of affiliate programs , build a website, start to advertise, and in general just feel good that you’re making some headway towards building your new business, even if you‘re the only one that can see that.

A month or so goes by and you haven’t made the $10,000.00 that you dreamed of and now your closest friends and even family members are starting to grumble that you’re just throwing away money on this nonsense.

This moment is probably one of the toughest times in a home business owners career because this is where the rubber meets the road. Many owners have told me of losing close friends because they decided to pursue their dream. Believe me when I tell you, if you attempt to make your dreams come true, you will surely lose some friends because the thought of actually being successful scares a lot of people.

These are the type of decisions that home business owners have to make everyday.

Everyday that is, until you are able to show those that are skeptical that your little one page website is starting to actually make some real money and is even starting to compete with your regular jobs’ income.

Now the skeptics are giving you a second look, take you serious, and even start to ask you questions about how you’re doing it and how much does it cost you to operate the business that they said you were crazy to get involved with in the first place.

There is no thrill better than to show your first check and to know that you understand how you made that money and to know that you have within yourself the knowledge and ability, regardless to what anyone else says, to multiply that income by 30%, 50%, or even 500% if you just knuckle down and apply yourself.

Yes, the home business arena is a very competitive arena to work in, but, then in this year of 2007, isn’t just being in the job market quite a challenge itself?

The idea of being in business for yourself is an idea that we all ponder from time to time but the thrill of the ride to get to your idea of success is well worth the frustrations and thrills that you must go through to get there.

Never let anyone steal your dreams and if you have a desire to have your own home business, then go for it, because you never know what you can do until you try.

When asked of his opinion on the matter, he stated that personally, for him, its shocking. Dr. Zucker was, at the time, working as a contractor conducting studies for the Education Department. He is no longer employed for the same department.

The Department of Education has been screening different employees such as Dr. Zucker, investigating with a background check involving a certain level of security for people accessing information of a sensitive class. One of the members of the Department of Education, spokeswoman Katherine McLane, stated that background checks of such extent must be allowed because of the sensitive information being worked with. This includes things such as names and social security numbers of the college students or candidates.

The question at hand was if the background checks as a method of employment screening was invading a right to privacy. One of 100 employees of the department submitted a letter protesting the extensive investigation involving medical and financial records. This was signed by the researchers stating that it was far more information than needed towards Margaret Spellings, the secretary of education.

Suffice it to say that links to non-related subject pages and links from a page where there are already lots of other links present won't be of much value to you either.

Having a great link program running is vital to developing a successful home business online. When you join an affiliate program you will be given banners. The idea is to place these mini advertisements on other peoples web pages. More than likely other people won't be interested in you doing this unless you put their links on your pages. If you have your own web page then you'll be able to partake in link exchange. If you are not using your own website it will be very difficult for you to get those high quality one-way links. Your rating and hence your home business will suffer because of this.

ENTRY CARD INTO EXCELLENT SITES. Having your own website will give you access to areas you would otherwise be unable to go. If you only have your affiliate web pages then some sites will not accept you. For example some article distribution services will not allow affiliate links in your resource box at the end of your articles. You can still post your articles but you wont benefit so don't even waste your time doing this.

Some forums will not allow you to take your affiliate links with you. Some of the top forums for Internet marketing come into this category. These are fabulous places to be. Anyone with an online business will benefit from the knowledge that can be gained simply by becoming involved in such forums. Of course you can always go there and not take your affiliate links. You may not appreciate this fact at this stage but when you spend time in forums it is best for you to leave your domain name with every entry.

MAXIMIZE YOUR ARTICLE LINKS. You know you need to write articles to get your website links out there in the wider community. Your articles will contain links in the resource box. These links will continue to work for you in years to come. You will have no idea as to where these articles may crop up in the future so it's imperative that the resource box has something in it that is going to be relevant in the future.

I personally regret not knowing about this when I started writing my articles. Now I have my own site and I know that my previously published articles have links in the resource boxes that are pointing to my affiliate pages. This is better than having sent out articles with no links and certainly better than not writing the articles in the first place. All my articles now direct people to my primary website which has a home for my affiliate links.

You've spent good time and energy on writing your articles. They are important so don't waste your article links.

IT'S COST EFFECTIVE, EASY AND FUN TO DO Having your own website is very affordable. You will need to shop for two things. You will need a domain name and someone to host your site. Do a search to have a look at the cost of the various companies providing these services. One thing I learnt is that it is best to buy these two things at the same site. You can buy them at different sites but it will save you a lot of mucking around if you don't have to transfer anything after you've made your purchase.

Don't be afraid of designing your own web page! Even if your only experience with the Internet has been reading and sending out personal emails. You will find that creating your own site is really very easy. There are some excellent free sites that will guide you every step of the way. I strongly recommend using NVU. They can be found at http://www.nvu.com/index.php . I have personally used this free resource. It takes a bit of time and dedication when it's your first time but it really works and you'll have fun too. It may take you a week and in some cases a bit longer but once it's done you'll be proud of your efforts. You will never regret it. If you really don't think you are up to it then you can always pay someone to do it for you.

I just finished reading an article written by a good friend of mine who coaches companies and their employees to better performance. In this particular article, he was discussing women in business and the different set of attributes they bring into the workplace. And it got me to thinking.

For a long time, women in competitive careers were led to believe (and many times rightly so) that they had to "play a man's game" in order to progress and succeed in business. And though for years, women have been successful in business playing by "man-rules", it's absolutely not necessary, nor good advice for today's success.

What we now know of course, is that men and women may have different perspectives and approaches to business. But either can be successful in the entrepreneurial arena without giving up or giving over their own unique abilities.

Men and women have various attributes in common that are of benefit in the corporate realm, however, women are at their unquestionable best when we use the characteristics and attributes that are unique to us. And, employing those attributes to our own enterprises can make a good business an absolutely phenomenal success. Examples of the unique perspectives of female entrepreneurs can be found in niche markets such as catering, personal shopping or commercial construction cleanup just to name a few.

For those of you women who are about to delve into the world of entrepreneurship and are considering the type of business enterprise that you want to develop, here are some thoughts:

First, and most important for both women and men, is do what you love. There is something in you, something you're truly passionate about. Find a way to turn that passion into a business.

I've no doubt that you have probably heard that advice before, it's certainly not new. But there are several reasons that it is important. One, when you're involved in doing something you truly love, your passion is one of your greatest assets in driving your business. When you interact with others about the focus of your passion, you're animated, interesting and convincing in ways that would take much more time to practice and develop otherwise.

Passion causes you to be much more motivated, in fact you become what could be called "ultra" motivated. This is key, especially during the period before the money starts rolling in. For you to work an 8-hour day after you've already worked an 8-hour day for someone else (something all women know a little bit about), you have to be highly motivated. While you're building your business (and most people start businesses while they're still earning their grocery money from an outside employer), you have to have a powerful reason that causes you stay up working until 3:00AM, when you have to be up at 6:00AM to go to your "day job".

Another reason for developing your business from your passion is that whatever it is you're passionate about, more than likely you're an expert on. You've been reading and reviewing information on the subject for years. You've taken trips, visited sites, and participated in activities or events having to do with the object of your passion. You've already become involved in or developed some type of "network" (and ladies, we all know how to network) of other like-minded individuals who are as interested and passionate about your interest as you are. These are all excellent resources for you and for your clientele as you establish your business. It also greatly shortens or eliminates any learning curve relative to your business product or service knowledge to free you to concentrate on building the business itself.

In addition to pursuing your passion, another idea to keep in mind is that in the beginning, as you brainstorm ideas for your business development, let the sky be the limit. Use your wildest imagination to explore ideas and options. Don't begin the process of developing your enterprise by making a laundrylist of all of the reasons that you can't do this. Find absolutely as many reasons as possible to demonstrate why you can!

Last, and this is very important, be very selective about listening to the advice of friends and relatives. While they ultimately mean well (at least most of the time), the people around you are used to you and your life as it is. And, they're comfortable with that. Whenever you contemplate change, especially the types of changes brought about through successful business ownership, people can get uncomfortable. And when people are forced out of their comfort zone, they will fight tooth and nail to get back to it. If that means discouraging you in the process, then so be it, too bad for you.

Don't fall prey to the fears and negativity of others. If you can't seem to be around positive and encouraging people, find a new group of people to be around. And, if that's not possible, then be your own best friend. Solitude is much sweeter than failure at the hands of selfish people.

Be encouraged by your history. For hundreds, even thousands of years, women have been successful entrepreneurs. Our unique mindset, viewpoints, attitudes and skills as women have all contributed to our successes in business. Let that be your legacy to a new generation, and bring your own bit of spice and flavor to the business table.

Ever wonder if you could make some of your own bath and body products at home? I know, most of you will audibly laugh at the idea of even having the time to take a bubble bath, much less actually making something you'd want to put in your bath water and sit in! Ok, I get it. You're busy. But just imagine that you have a few minutes one weekend and get the ingredients together to make your own deliciously scented, natural spa products. Wouldn't that leave you with a warm sense of accomplishment and ultimately a warm, frothy bubble bath or scrubby facial mask?

Let's assume you go with option number two, and make a date with yourself to create something wonderful. Hey, you could even go as far as getting together some like-minded (bath product enthusiasts) friends, chill some good wine and make a party out of it! Everyone can take home their creations and report back later as to the overall effect and results. I can make a party out of just about anything these days.

So, here is an easy and yummy smelling home-made soap recipe to get you started and in the mood for more. You'll want to gather your ingredients a few days in advance. Have fun!

‘A' is for Apple Soap

4oz. clear, unscented glycerine soap
1 Tablespoon liquid soap
1 teaspoon liquid glycerine
1/2 teaspoon Apple Fragrance Oil
2 drops Red Food Color
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Melt soap in small pan over low heat. Add Liquid soap and glycerine and stir well gently Add fragrance, color and cinnamon. Stir and let stand a couple minutes, until you see it start to thicken and the cinnamon is mixed evenly. Pour into molds such as muffin tins or character candy or soap molds. Allow to set completely and store in zip lock storage bags.

When the soaps are all set, they make great little gifts for special occasions. How cute would they be as a ‘Teacher Gift' at Christmas time, especially if you use ‘apple' molds. There are more home-made recipes and ideas at ‘Natural You Mineral Makeup and Skincare.com'.

It is too irritating when you are on important calls with your family members hovering over you. So by allotting time you can concentrate on your work.

Make a To Do list everyday- By having a detailed daily list for you to accomplish everyday, you can remain focused. If you know your target then you really get the zeal to work and accomplish it. Household chores are much more enjoyable than making cold calls or working on something really boring, so by making a list you can focus on your work much better and the desire to do something else also fades out.

Set your daily deadline for your projects- Although there is no one bossing over you while working at home and usually this approach distracts you and keeps you away from your track. Hence, set dead lines with others to help keep yourself focused especially if the accountability helps you.

Give yourself some breaks- It is really fine if you take some time out for yourself while working from home, as long as it is not a regular occurrence. You dont have to worry and stress out too much. However if your relaxation period overtakes the work schedule, then you need to reconsider. As long as it is under control it is quite an energy booster.

Share your goals with advisors- Accountability generally works well with most of the people because they know that they have to report their progress to someone and then this keeps them going.

Guess What? I’m actually dropshipping on eBay and making money doing it! Never ever thought I would be this far ahead in my internet career in this short of a time span. As Controller for a manufacturing company I make a decent living, but selling on eBay pays me almost as much…not quite, but I’m getting there! Too awesome!

All the so called “internet guru’s” sell stuff on eBay…at least that is what I’ve learned so far in my search for internet riches. They all want to give you their “one-on-one” eBay training for a few thousand dollars as well. Don’t fall for it…it’s just another way to put a few thousand dollars more into their pockets. Anyone can sell stuff on eBay and you don’t need to pay someone a few thousand dollars to tell you how to do it. They became internet guru’s by suckering some poor fools into paying them a bunch money to tell them their “secret techniques”, which you can find out for free if you search on the internet long enough.

For newbies that don’t know what a dropshipper is, here is a perfect explanation:

Let's say you ran across a product on a dropshipping site for $20.00. You would sell that product for a price you would determine, let's use $50.00 plus $4.95 postage and handling for an example. After you collect the payment of $54.95 from the customer and their mailing address, you would forward the $20.00 plus $4.95 postage costs to the supplier, and keep the $30.00 as profit, never having to touch or store the Product, as the supplier sends it out to the customer. This type of arrangement is extremely beneficial to both yourself, and the supplier. The supplier does not have to open a storefront, or hire sales people to sell their products, as that is the role of the dropshipper. You, as the dropshipper, have a way to earn some spare money, having no start-up costs, no overhead, no packaging costs or headaches, and can create an extremely useful relationship with the supplier. Dropshipping is a great way to run a business without carrying stock.

Using the above method, you can start your own online store and never have to carry any merchandise. This is how the internet works and it’s great for those who know how to create their own websites and can keep up with their dropshippers product and price changes. That alone can be a challenge, but if you can contribute a few hours a day to your website, dropshipping is an excellent way to make extra money.

A friend of mine, Joe (not his real name) recently asked for my opinion about investing in an online business. He had found this "fantastic" money making opportunity on the Internet. Joe was thinking of investing a substantial amount. All he had to do for this "online business" was view a couple of websites a day and he would be paid a percentage of his investment every month. He said some people were making thousands every week! When I heard this, red lights flashed in my mind and they were screaming "SCAM! SCAM! SCAM!"

When he had finished telling me about the "investment", I asked him two questions: "Don't you think it sounds too good to be true and have you done any background research into this?" Joe said he did do some checking and although he found a fair bit of criticism about this "investment" on a couple of online forums and chat rooms, he was still willing to invest and see if it worked. I then asked, "Joe, you sound desperate. Is everything OK with your business?" The truth finally came out. Joe's business had folded about a month earlier and YES, he was desperate. I advised him to hold on to his money - that he would need all his money to help him and his family through the tough time ahead. I offered walk him through starting an online business if he really wanted to - just not this particular one.

This wasn't the first time someone had asked me about such "investments" when they were in the midst of a crisis. Desperate people resort to desperate measures. It's so very easy to believe what you read on the Internet. The web is filled with millions of sites that guarantee you riches if you will just make a "minimal investment". The cold, hard fact is that there are many irresponsible internet marketers out there who prey on the weakness of desperate folk, getting them to part with their money - which is a precious commodity when you're jobless - to make themselves rich.

Most people fail to realize that in many ways, an online business is like a regular business. It takes time and effort to build it into something successful. It definitely does not happen overnight the way many internet marketers would have you believe. After all, if they told you the truth - that it DOES take time and effort - would you part with your money so easily?

Here are some examples of when you should AVOID investing in an online business:

•When you've just lost your job or source of income. The sense of desperation leads many into rash decisions that they soon regret and they are left much poorer!

•When you're all hyper after discovering that one-in-a-million opportunity which needs your response A.S.A.P because "places are limited".

•When you've had a bad day at the office, and you've been grilled by your boss and you want out - NOW!

•When you read or hear someone tell you how "easy" it is to make tons of money on the internet and they want you to join them - NOW!

•When you suddenly find yourself in a financial crisis.

•When you've just quarreled for the thousandth time with your wife about money.

You get the message - DON'T invest in an online business when you're emotionally charged. That's exactly what internet marketers WANT you to do! I know it's hard to do but channel all that energy and frustration into research instead. Do it as if your life depended on it - and it probably does. Be ruthless in your fact-finding. Be objective in what you read and hear. Be merciless in rooting out potential SCAMS. Give yourself some breathing space, do your homework and when you find an online business that you are confident about, JUMP IN! Go into it with all your heart and don't stop till you've reached your goal!
