Business and Market Overview of Thailand

ECONOMY. Thailand has a pro-business market economy driven by strong foreign investments and export oriented manufacturing especially in electronics, foods and automobiles. Thailand's exports account for 60% of the country's GDP. Thailand experienced strong economic growth prior to the Asian economic crisis of 1997 with GDP growth averaging 9.4% annually. However, the crisis adversely affected businesses in Thailand and saw the value of the Thai Baht decline by more than 50% against the US dollar. Since the crisis, the economy has grown on a growth path.
Thailand's GDP was US$163.5 billion with a GDP per capita of US$2,537 in 2004. Thailand's GDP grew by an average of 4.6% annually from 2000 to 2004 driven mainly by exports of high technology products mainly electronics. Inflation remained below 2.0% from 2000 to 2003 but increased to 2.8% by 2004. However, unemployment showed a declining trend from 3.6% in 2000 to 1.8% by 2004.
Nearly 60% of Thailand's workforce is involved in the agriculture industry but contributed to only 9.8% of the country's GDP in 2004. The services industry contributed towards 46.1% of Thailand's GDP and manufacturing 44.1% during the period. Major industries include tourism, electronics, textiles and garments, processed foods, beverages, agriculture produce, jewellery, furniture, plastics, vehicles and vehicle parts and mining of tungsten and tin. Major agriculture products include rice, tapioca, rubber, corn, sugarcane, coconuts, soybean and milk.

DEMOGRAPHY. Ethnic Thais account for 75% of Thailand's 65 million population and another 11% are Chinese or Sino-Thais who have assimilated into the Thai culture or are from mixed marriages. Minorities include Malays who lived mainly in southern Thailand and account for 4% of the population. Others include the Mon, Lao, Khmers, Puan and Karen minorities and immigrants from India. Nearly 95% of the country's population are Buddhists while Malays in Thailand are predominantly Muslims. Thai is the national language while languages used by the minorities include Malay, Isan and Khmer. Schools teach English but proficiency is low and generally, the educated elite are more proficient with the language.
The majority of the Thai population still live in the rural communities though the proportion of the urban population is increasing. Thailand's urban population increased from 22% of the total population in 2000 to 31% by 2004. Thailand's capital and major city Bangkok accounts for nearly 8% of the country's total population. Other major cities include Nonthaburi, Pak Kret, Hat Yai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chiang Mai and Udon Thani.
Thailand successfully reduced the poverty level from 27% in 1990 to 10% by 2004. The proportion of the population categorised belonging in the low-income household is estimated at 60% while middle and high-income households account for 30%. The average household income in Bangkok is twice than the national average.

INFRASTRUCTURE. Telecommunication services to the general public are overall adequate. Internet broadband services are mostly concentrated in Bangkok. Cities and towns are well connected by roads but lacks super highways connecting Thailand's cities and major towns. Cities the major towns are served by airports and well connected by buses and rail system.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE. Thailand's major trading partners include Japan, US, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan. Main exports from Thailand include electronics, vehicle and vehicle parts, textiles, garments, footwear, seafood, processed foods, rice, rubber, jewellery, electrical appliances including computers. Main imports include machineries and equipments, raw materials and finished products, consumer goods and fuels.

CONSUMER USAGE OF TECHNOLOGY. There were nearly 17.3 million installed fixed-line telephones in 2004 giving a penetration of 40% of all Thai homes installed with telephones. The penetration of mobile phones increased from just 7% of the population in 2001 to 42% or 27 million mobile phones by 2004. The penetration of computers is still low but increased from 5.1% of the households in 2001 to nearly 12% by 2004. The number of internet users reached an estimated 8 million in 2004 but most of the internet users are concentrated in Bangkok and the major cities and towns. The penetration of television in homes in 93% indicating many low-income homes have televisions.

RETAIL MARKET. The retail industry in Thailand totalled an estimated US$24.5 billion in 2004. There are nearly 300,000 traditional "mom and pop" stores in Thailand accounting for 65% of the total retail sales. However, there are 4,500 modern retail establishments (hypermarkets, supermarkets, department stores and convenience stores) accounting for 35% of the total retail sales. Most of the modern retail establishments are located in Bangkok. Shopping in modern retail establishments is increasingly popular and more establishments expected in the near future.

FOOD CULTURE. Rice is the staple food but while those in central and southern Thailand prefer white fragrant rice those in northern Thailand prefer the glutinous variety. Thai dishes are generally hot and spicy but foods from the northern region are generally milder. Thais are less adapting to western foods even if they could afford it compared to consumers in Singapore and Malaysia. However, bakery and coffer shop chains are gaining popularity among young professionals who have adapted to western culture.

The following 5 pillars will make sure you are on the right track for starters. And do not try to scramble them. Research the pillars one by one, in the right order, or you might just be better of playing the lottery.

Pillar no. 1. Company management experience with integrity:

You got to make sure that the company management have a long experience with integrity. If they do not have this experience they probably don't know how to create a compensation-plan based on reality.

The policies and terms of use. Do never overlook this part. It is your contract. The longer list of terms the more overhead, the longer wish of protecting their rights to take money from you. It is their attorneys that have written your contract to protect their company. And if you can not find the terms. Look no further!

Look for on going demands of effort like: You have to sponsor 1 new lead each month or you will not get your commission. Many programs have built in a lot of this kind of rules to keep the money in the company.

Be attentive if it is a public traded company. They will always have the investors demands of higher profits, and will probably change the terms if the investors are not satisfied.

Do a Google search on the company and the owners of the company you are researching. Add the word 'scam' to your search. Check reliable websites like www.mlmwatchdog.com for warnings.

Pillar no. 2. Timing in the company and timing in the industry:

Never join a startup company. 99% of them won't make it 2 years. Do not be a guinea pig. They will have too many growing pains and they probably do not even for-fill the pillar no. 1 in many cases. Wait at least 2 years. The top income earners joins after a company is 2 years old.

You also got to pick a company/branch with the right timing and potentials of lasting for many years to come. You have to ask yourself, if the demand of their products remain? Will they be able to retain a consistency of their product pricing, and not ending up in a over saturated market.

Pillar no. 3. A product that is remarkable:

The company must be focusing on retailing the product and not on the recruiting.

Ask yourself if you would buy this product (retail-price) if it was not a money opportunity connected to it? If your answer is no. Just drop further action with this company.

Simple reason no 1:
If the company is about recruiting it is illegal.

Simple reason no 2:
A Company with focus on retailing their products, will make your residual income last.

The company must be focusing on retailing the product and not on the recruiting. You should aim at the proportions of 1 distributor to 9 users/customers. That will build your future income!

Do your research. Is the retail prices competitive in comparison to similar products in the market. If it is not, your future users won't have an insentive to buy your product. Remember that they are only using the product and are not in for the opportunity (which they not are supposed to be). Your residual income is totaly hung up on this reality.

Pillar no. 4. A compensation-plan that pays part time people:

95% of your team will consist of part time workers. There will of course be a problem if a part time working person doesn't get compensated/payed fairly. He or she would then obviously feel forced to quit. You will have to do your math. Learn to understand how their compensation-plan works. How many people do you have to have in your group to achiev $10.000/month? Is it 5500, 300, 2000 representatives? Why would you want to work that much harder for the same income?

You will have to figure out if they compensate the distributers fairly and encourage retail. What do you think happens if you stop recruiting? Your income will drop tremendously. If you have had the proportion of 1 distributor to 9 users/customers, it is the users that will be your residual income. Therefore the compensation plan have to create a behavior of selling the product, not recruiting.

Pillar no. 5. System to success:

People are not duplicatable. Systems are!

A list of all your friends and family members are not a system. Thats your upline wanting to turn you into that pushy sales guy almost everyone disapprove of.

If you have failed in network marketing before it is probably not your fault. You do not have to change to be successful in this business. You just had not got these 5 pillars. And you probably didn't have this last one either. A real system. A duplicatable network system with a live mentoring environment. It is essential to have this kind of system that will help people through their learning curve. Without it, you will probably not stand a chance to reach duplication and success in your network marketing business.

Did you know sales success and icebergs have something in common? And no ...this article is not about cold calling!
Many of us know an iceberg has about 7/8th of its mass below water. But did you know the largest Northern Hemisphere iceberg on record was encountered near Baffin Island in 1882? It was 8 miles (13 km) long, 3.7 miles (6 km) wide and rose 65 feet (20 m) above the water. The mass of that iceberg was in excess of 9 billion tonnes - enough water for everyone, in the world to drink a quart (litre) a day for over 4 years.
Well thanks for the lesson on icebergs you're probably thinking but what has that got to do with sales?
Go back to the first fact; the majority of an iceberg is below the surface. In sales, much of what controls our success is below the surface. Let me explain.
Think of the iceberg, the tip which we see, could be compared to the action and results of sales professionals. We see sales results. Companies track share of market, percentage of plan, year-over-year performance to name just a few metrics. We also see what a sales person does. We can observe and track the number of calls made, appointments kept, sales made, and referrals obtained.
What we can't see, the part under the surface is what the sales professional is thinking. This I submit is the most critical component for a sales person to be successful. We talked about icebergs, now for a short psychology lesson.
Cognitive behavioural science suggests that what we are thinking about today determines our reality tomorrow. That is, a person's outer world is a reflection of their inner world. If a sales professional is interested in creating a new reality for themselves, whether that new reality is bringing in a new client or whether it is moving up to the next level in sales effectiveness, this new frame of reference is first created in the person's mind. It all starts with an idea, a concept and a desire for enhanced results.
I've heard it said that a person sees more with their state of mind than with their eyes. For example, take an optimist and a pessimist to the same restaurant and afterwards they are likely to report quite different experiences even though the service, the meal, the company, and the location were exactly the same. The optimist's positive frame of mind focused on what was enjoyable while the pessimist's negative state of mind zeroed in on everything that was wrong.
This fascinating area of psychology reinforces the concept that our thinking is our greatest ally in demonstrating effective sales competencies. In other words, top sales performers think in a way that helps them to perform at an optimal level. The good news is you can change your thinking style to improve performance.
The best sales professionals are effective thinkers. They focus on what they want to achieve, they regularly review their sales objectives and they think in a constructive, supportive fashion, using their creative imagination in harmony with their intelligence, reason and free will. Think of this as their "mindset" which influences their focus, motivation and confidence.
So the next time you see an iceberg (or maybe ice in a drink), think of what's below the surface of your mind. Think of the impact your mindset can have on your sales success.
