You may find some of these tips to be familiar. Maybe you practice some of them now. Or maybe they have slipped from your memory and your daily routine. Others may even be new to you. Whatever your circumstance, they're just as valid now as they ever were - and perhaps more relevant today than ever before. Put them to regular use and watch your sales, your profits and your customer loyalty increase to new heights.

1. Employ a consultative approach to selling. Learn about your customer's business and find out how you can help them achieve their strategic goals. Propose solutions that will alleviate their "pain", and allow them to realize reduced costs, higher productivity or increased revenues.

2. Offer what you know - not just what you sell. Customers expect more today than ever before. Share your expertise with them. The value you add to your relationship with your customers will come back to you in the form of increased sales and customer loyalty.

3. Find out "what's in it" for your prospect. How would a successful outcome affect them personally? What do they hope to achieve by doing business with you? Sure, your proposal needs to make good business sense - to be a good business decision for your prospect. But dig deeper. Find out how they'll personally benefit from doing business with you and make their "dreams come true."

4. Work with your prospects to prioritize their stated goals. Whatever change to their situation your solution offers, it must align with your prospect's priorities. Help them identify, rank and place a value on relieving their "pain points."

5. Remember that you're selling benefits, solutions and results - not features. Your customer doesn't care how many bells and whistles your product boasts. They just want to know what it will do for them. Show them how your product or service will streamline operations, foster higher employee retention, increase sales, reduce costs or help them achieve their highest-level strategic priorities.

6. Become a trusted advisor. Demonstrate to your customers that you will serve their best interests by staying informed about their business and their industry, by offering only those products or services that will truly benefit them and by providing relevant, meaningful information to them before and after the sale.

7. Be disciplined. Move yourself to take action - plan your day in writing - use a database of your contacts. Make yourself do the things you know you should do.

8. Systematize your process. Script what you'll say, when you'll say it, and how you'll say it. Practice until it flows naturally. Become the script.

9. Follow up. Implement and support your solution. Don't become a "one hit wonder." Stay in touch with your customer. Continue to add value to your relationship. Be in it for the long haul.

10. Adjust your mindset to be customer-focused rather than outcome-focused. This mindset will yield benefits to you during the entire sales process - from the early stages of prospecting to closing the sale - and beyond. It will ease performance pressure and allow you to become a strategic partner with your customers. Can you say "customer loyalty?"

11. Use success stories to illustrate the results your prospect can expect by doing business with you. Customers don't want to be "guinea pigs." They don't usually want to be the "first kid on their block" to try something untested. They just want to know that your product or service will give them the results they want and need.

12. Quality beats quantity when it comes to prospecting. Working backwards, determine the number of prospects you need to talk with to reach your sales goals. Determine what characteristics are common among your best customers. Then contact the number of prospects required to meet your sales goals who also share those characteristics. By doing so you'll be selling to a very targeted market.

13. Be ready to resolve customer complaints with a cool head. Actively listen. Find a mutually agreeable solution.

14. Selling is a high level of customer service. Customer service, when delivered properly, equals additional sales, higher profits and more loyal customers.

15. Welcome your customers to your business as if you were welcoming friends to your home. Customers are all we have. Treat each of them as if they were your only customer. Don't be too quick to jump from customer to customer based on which one appears to hold the most promise at any given moment. You're in it for the long haul. Be sure to bring your customers along for the ride as you travel the road to sales success.

Most surveys show the average business loses about 19% of its client base each year. In fact, the authors of, "Customer Winback: How To Recapture Lost Customers - and Keep Them Loyal" estimates the average at 20 to 40% per year.

This means that if you have 500 customers and lose 19% or 95 customers you must get 95 new customers each year just to stay even.

Research shows it costs six times more to get a prospect to buy from you than it does to keep an existing customer, and it's 16 times easier to sell to an existing customer than to a new one.

So why would you spend any marketing dollars on new prospects before doing everything you can to get more business from your existing and past clients? Let me repeat that, "Why would you spend any marketing dollars on new prospects before doing everything you can to get more business from your existing and past clients?"

The truth is that the real money to be made by most businesses is from additional sales of products and services to their existing customers and those they refer. Getting repeat and referral business is something most small business owners are not proficient in.

If you want your business to be successful, you need to have a compelling reason, "Why should your customers and prospects do business with you, rather than your competition"? You need to become someone they will gladly and often refer new customer prospects to!

The one strategy that can do more for building your business than just about anything else you can do and the most overlooked marketing tool by almost every business is "Follow Up"!

You need to immediately put in place a strategy and an effective system to follow up with: - Existing Customers - Past Customers - Potential Customers or Prospects

Since it costs six times more to get a new customer to buy from you, it just makes sense to spend much of your time, effort and money on strengthening your relationships with your existing customers and turning them into referral machines for you.

In developing a follow up system for your customers and prospects, you need to determine: - The number of times you want to contact them and over what period of time - The frequency of contact. For example, every two month plus on their birthday - The method of contact. Will you send a greeting card, post card or letter? Research has shown that a greeting card will get opened 12 times more often that other types of mail. - Determine the purpose of the contact. Will you be thanking them for buying from you, making them a special offer or asking for a referral?

A study done by the Association of sales Executives revealed that 81% of all sales happen on or after the fifth contact. If you're only doing one or two follow up's, imagine all the business you are losing. Not following up with your customers and prospects is like filling up your bathtub without first putting the stopper in the drain! Here's an example of an eight contact follow up system you could put in place in your business, modify it to meet your business needs: 1. When they buy from you - send a "Thank You" card 2. January - send a "New Years" card 3. March - send an Item-of-Value or Special Offer letter 4. May - send a "Referral Request" card 5. July - send a "Fourth of July" card 6. September - send an Item-of-Value or Special Offer letter 7. November - send a "Referral Request" card 8. Birthday - send a "Birthday" card

Greeting Cards! Every month, every person who had ever bought a car from him got a greeting card. Question 1: "Are You Someone I Can Trust?" or "Can I Believe What You Say?"

Let's face it...the online world is full of con artists and scammers who are constantly screaming at us that if we join their business we can make gazillions of dollars every month. You have to show your prospects that you are different. They need to trust you and know that you're real, and not just some over hyped huckster on the Internet.

How do you get a prospect to trust you? Simple. By showing them that you care more about their needs than you do your own. Take the time to get to know your prospect. Ask questions about their life. Find out why they want to start their own home-based business. It's been said for ages that the good Lord gave us all two ears and one mouth for a reason. Be sure you are doing more listening than talking.

This is extremely important because if your prospect doesn't trust you, it won't matter how great your home business is, or how fantastic your product is, because they are NOT going to join you in any business. You must establish a trust with any prospect. Try to find a connection between the two of you. Do you share any hobbies, or interests? Build upon that.

Here are some other ways to build trust in the eyes of your prospects:

· Have your contact information on your website and emails. This should absolutely include your phone number.

· Have a picture of yourself, or you and your family, on your website. A picture establishes trust very quickly, and it also shows your prospects that you're a real person.

· Always be honest with your prospects. Never make income guarantees, or promises you can't keep.

· Be yourself. Let your prospect know you're a regular person who has the same types of everyday problems as they do.

Question 2: "Can I Do What You're Doing?" or "Can I Do This Business?"

Your prospects are going to look at what you are doing and determine in their minds whether or not they can do the same thing. It is vitally important that you keep things simple. The simpler you keep your home business, the better.

How are you building your business? Are you making tons of cold-calls to complete strangers? (Yikes! No one is going to want to try and build a home business doing that.) Are you building through the Internet and using online techniques to attract new business partners? Are you emailing leads your home business opportunity and directing them to your website? And the list can on and on.

Whatever methods you are using to build your business, they must be simple and non-threatening in the mind of your prospect. Offer them choices. Work with them to discover what methods are the most comfortable to them. Everyone is different. Let them see that they have many choices in how to build their home business.

You will also want to let your prospect know that it will take some time to build their home business, and not to expect microwave results. They need to be patient. Make sure they know that you'll be there for them and help them along the way. Give them the tools they need to be successful.

Your prospect may never actually come out and ask you these two questions, but if you can answer these questions for your prospects as you go along in speaking with them, you're going to build their trust, respect, and confidence. And in doing so, you're going to begin building a huge business of your own.

When someone has a higher position or more authority than you, the automatic trigger is that whatever that person says must be true. The FAA found that many errors by flight captains were not challenged or corrected by other members of the crew. This blind obedience to position and authority resulted in catastrophes. One airline, concerned about this evidence, tested their flight crews via flight simulators. They created conditions that would lead to mental overload and emotional stimulation. The captains (in one study) would make fatal mistakes at a critical moment. The airline was shocked to find out that 25% of the flights would have crashed because the subordinates did not take corrective action and challenge the position of the plane's captain.

AUTHORITY BY POSITION

Those who have authority based on the position they hold in the community have Positional Authority. This includes your boss, the U.S. President, or a police officer. A landmark study conducted by Stanley Milgram at Yale University illustrates just how powerful Positional Authority can be. In his experiment, Milgram had some participants pose as "teachers," while others portrayed the "learners." The "teachers" were told they were going to help the researcher test the learning levels in the "learners" by giving progressively more intense shocks each time a "learner" answered memory questions incorrectly.

Of course, no real shock was administered, but the "teachers" were not aware of the false premise, and the "learners" were instructed to act as though the pain were real. It appeared as though the "learner" were suffering intense pain. The purpose of the study was to see how far the "teachers" would go in obeying the head researcher's authority, even if it meant inflicting great pain on a fellow human being. The results were astounding: Two-thirds of the subjects delivered as much pain as they could (450 volts), pulling all 30 of the shock switches, even when the acting "learners" pleaded, begged, and even screamed for them to stop the experiment.

This experiment strikingly demonstrates the concepts we've made about Positional Authority. Consider the following key points: First of all, the "teachers" were noticeably uncomfortable with what they were doing. In fact, they hated it. Many of them asked the researcher to please end the experiment. But when he refused, they continued on, trembling, perspiring, and some even laughing nervously. In spite of their extreme discomfort, almost all of the "teachers" continued to obey the head researcher until the experiment was over. The converse is also revealing: When the scripts were reversed and it was the "learners" ordering the "teachers" to deliver more shocks, while the researcher protested, not even one single person obeyed! One hundred percent refused to obey the "learners" over the researcher. After obtaining the shocking results of this experiment, Milgram wrote, "It is the extreme willingness of adults to go to almost any lengths on the command of an authority that constitutes the chief finding of the study."

AUTHORITY BY UNIFORM

Do clothes really "make the man"? In certain instances, yes, they do. When you wear a uniform to play a certain role, that uniform evokes power over others. People create impressions or even illusions of power with what they wear. When you wear the right clothes for the situation, you can persuade without even speaking. Think of what a police uniform says; imagine a police officer trying to clear a urban riot in street clothes. The officer in uniform will get immediate attention because we respond and respect uniforms. Even clergy who wear their robes command more respect and are able to persuade and influence with higher efficiency than they can when sporting street clothes. We see a doctor in a white coat and automatically assume he is a medical professional who knows exactly what to prescribe. When a businessperson shows up in a $1,500 suit and polished shoes, we automatically assume his is in charge or is the decision maker. We know people treat us differently based on how we dress.

In one experiment, a man would stop pedestrians in New York City. The experimenter either had them pick up paper bags, move from where they were standing, or requested they give money to a perfect stranger. The experimenter would point to another man nearly fifty feet away, telling them the man had over parked and didn't have any change to pay the meter. He would then tell them to go give the man the necessary change. Researchers watched to see how many people complied when the experimenter was dressed in normal street clothes versus when he was dressed as a security guard. After giving the command, the experimenter would turn a corner so he was out of the pedestrian's sight. Incredibly, almost all of the pedestrians obeyed when he was dressed in uniform, even after he was gone! When he was dressed in street clothes, less than half of the pedestrians complied with his request. In another study, Lawrence and Watson found that individuals asking for contributions to law enforcement and healthcare campaigns gathered more donations when wearing sheriffs' and nurses' uniforms than when they just dressed normally.

AUTHORITY BY TITLE

We are all suckers to titles. When we hear "doctor" in front of a name, it automatically registers in our mind that this person is important, powerful, and intelligent. We don't even ask if he or she graduated at the bottom of their class. In the medical profession, the "Dr." is the king and the head decision-maker. We love to hear "two out of three doctors recommend" or "nine out ten dentists use this product or service." This is all based on authority power. We respect, admire, and follow the recommendations or opinions of those in authority.

In one particular case, researchers wanted to test and see if the power of authority by title won out over established rules and regulations. They were going to see if nurses would over-prescribe an unauthorized drug to a patient when requested by doctor they didn't know. A researcher would call in and tell a nurse he was a doctor and that he wanted a 20 mg dose of a drug called Astrogen administered to a certain patient. He told her to do it as soon as possible so the drug would have time to take affect by the time he arrived. He further stated that he would sign the prescription upon his arrival. The experiment intentionally violated four rules: First, the hospital forbade prescriptions to be made over the phone; second, Astrogen was an unauthorized drug; third, the dosage was dangerously excessive - in fact, double the amount specified on the label; and fourth, the order was given by a supposed "doctor," whom the nurse had never met or even heard of. In spite of these red flags, a whopping 95% of the nurses headed straight for the medicine cabinet and on to the patient's room. Before they went any further, they were stopped by an undercover researcher, who told them about the experiment.
